A female connector (commonly referred to as a jack or an outlet) is a device that, together with the corresponding male connector, establishes the contact between two parts of an electric circuit. It is a receptacle that receives and holds the male connector in place.
The shape of female connectors hides the conductors when the connector is unplugged, lowering the risk of incidental exposure to the electric current.
