What ICMP (Internet Control Message Protocol)?

ICMP (Internet Control Message Protocol) is a network layer protocol that facilitates the exchange of information about network conditions. Network devices use ICMP to communicate with other devices in the same network and exchange network status and error reports. The best-known ICMP protocol application is the ping utility, which tests whether a certain host is reachable on the network.
