What Is a Byte?

A byte is a data unit in computing, representing a group of bits that can be used to encode a single character (letter, number, symbol). The standard byte consists of eight bits, but some computer architectures feature bytes with more or less than eight bits. To disambiguate, the 8-bit byte is additionally called the octet. The symbol for byte is the upper-case letter B.
