A daemon is a computer program that is usually initiated at the operating system startup and runs as a background process. The purpose of the daemon is to respond to network, hardware, or system requests to perform certain tasks. Examples of daemons include the mailer daemon for email messaging, Line Printer Daemon (LPD) for remote printing, systemd for Linux service configuration, etc.
