A ping, or packet internet groper, is a network diagnostic tool used to determine communication latency between two network nodes.
The software got its name from the sound used in active sonar technology. Like the sonar determines distance between vehicles, the ping determines the distance between network nodes. The larger the distance, the higher the ping value, and the larger the latency.
