The Storage Area Network (SAN) is an independent high-speed network providing block-level storage access. The network consists of servers, switches, and storage devices, connected with the purpose of increasing the utilization and effectiveness of storage, and improving security.
With SAN, servers access the data on the connected external storage devices as if the devices were directly attached to them. Storage Area Networks are typically part of the storage backup strategy.
