Telnet (teletype network) is an application protocol for two-way text communication through the internet or LAN. The protocol uses TCP to send textual messages through a virtual terminal, establishing an interactive communication channel.
Due to security issues, SSH is the preferred alternative over Telnet due to cryptographic enhancements.
